Maxim Weinstein, President & Executive Director

Maxim Weinstein has been leading StopBadware since 2007. He has spoken on malware policy and user education at conferences hosted by the Federal Trade Commission, the Anti-Spyware Coalition, and the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group. He also serves on the Massachusetts Educational Technology Advisory Council, the advisory board of the Anti Malware Testing Standards Organization (AMTSO), the K-12 working group of the National Cyber Security Alliance, and the IEEE ICSG malware working group. In 2009, he was recognized by SC Magazine as one of the year’s “information security luminaries.”

Prior to joining StopBadware, Maxim worked in a variety of positions involving technology, communications, education, and leadership across a range of industries. Most recently, he served as technology director and national management team member of Year Up, a Fast Company Social Capital Award winner.

Maxim is a graduate of Tufts University, from which he earned a master’s degree in teaching and a bachelor’s degree in quantitative economics and environmental studies.

Matthew Shanley, Lead Developer

Matthew Shanley joined StopBadware in 2010 as lead developer. He creates and maintains all of StopBadware’s web applications, a process that mainly involves repeatedly pressing plastic buttons. Prior to StopBadware, Matt was a web developer for companies including Constant Contact and HNW Inc.

Matt holds a Master’s of Fine Arts in Interrelated Media from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, a Bachelor’s of Science in Electronic Media, Art, and Communication from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and also attended Cornell University.

Oliver Day, Lead Security Analyst

Oliver Day has been analyzing and researching badware trends for StopBadware since 2006. He was formerly a principal security consultant for @stake where he focused on web applications and storage area networks. At @stake Oliver also lectured before dozens of Fortune 500 companies and educational institutions about network security. Before @stake, Oliver was an engineer with eEye Digital Security and created automated security checks to find flaws in newly discovered vulnerabilities. He has also been a staunch advocate of the disclosure process and providing shielding for security researchers.

Oliver is currently an undergraduate degree candidate at the Harvard Extension School, where he focuses on East Asian culture and history. He is an active member of Harvard Free Culture, Students Expressing Truth (SET) group and the Free Software Foundation.

Rich Jones, Intern

Rich is a recent graduate of Boston University, where he was the founder of Free Culture@BU, a group which helped start the school’s Open Education platform. He is the co-founder of Anomos Liberty Enhancements (http://www.anomos.info), a Massachusetts-based nonprofit which creates open source peer-to-peer security/privacy software. He was part of Google’s Summer of Code program, and is one of the top developers for Android, Google’s mobile operating system. He also enjoys bergamot and listening to music at high volumes.
